CLOSED – CONVERTED TO A CO-OP
Formerly the Western Union Hotel (and also South Western Hotel and London & SW Hotel), Drakes has a long history and famous connections; George Gale, its owner in the 1880s, married Thomas Hardy’s cousin Tryphena Sparks.
This is the most recent of the pub closures in Topsham, coming in 2013. It appears that it is being gutted to make space for the Co Op next door to expand into. Such a waste.
There is an excellent wine merchant (Topsham Wines) thirty yards from here, so why not have a little tipple there instead?
